In today's society, with the growing awareness of environmental protection, the pollution caused by traditional plastics has become an increasingly prominent issue. Plastic waste, which is difficult to degrade, accumulates over time, leading to air, water, and soil pollution, severely disrupting the ecological balance. As a result, biodegradable materials, as a green and environmentally friendly alternative, are gradually gaining favor from upstream and downstream enterprises in the plastics industry, becoming a crucial force driving industry transformation and upgrading.
Biodegradable plastics refer to a type of plastic that can be degraded by microorganisms (such as bacteria, molds, fungi, and algae) present in nature. These materials possess excellent performance and, when discarded, can be completely decomposed by environmental microorganisms, ultimately transforming into carbon dioxide, water, mineralized inorganic salts of their constituent elements, and new biomass, becoming part of the natural carbon cycle. Based on their raw material sources, biodegradable plastics can be classified into two categories: bio-based biodegradable plastics and petrochemical-based biodegradable plastics. The former includes plastics directly processed from natural materials and polymers obtained through a combination of microbial fermentation and chemical synthesis. The latter, on the other hand, are plastics polymerized from monomers derived from petrochemical products through chemical synthesis methods, such as PBAT and PBS.
The applications of biodegradable materials in the plastics industry are expanding rapidly, encompassing packaging materials, agricultural mulching films, disposable utensils, biomedical materials, and more. For instance, PLA (polylactic acid), a biodegradable plastic made from plant-based raw materials, is widely used in disposable utensils and packaging materials due to its good degradability and processing performance. PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate), with its high flexibility and processability, finds applications in food packaging and agricultural mulching films. Additionally, PHB (polyhydroxybutyrate), PBS (polybutylene succinate), and other biodegradable plastics play significant roles in their respective fields.
As global attention to environmental issues intensifies and consumer demand for green products increases, the market prospects for biodegradable materials are extremely promising. Market research institutions predict that in the coming years, the global market for single-use biodegradable plastic products will continue to grow, with a high annual compound growth rate. Particularly in countries and regions such as China, the United States, and Europe, the market demand for biodegradable materials will continue to rise, driving rapid industry development.
